Dhauti is one of the shatkarmas(cleansing practices) which we teach in our 200 hrs Yoga TTC in Rishikesh.

Dhauti is a cleansing process for the digestive tract.

Types of Dhauti:

(i) Vaman Dhauti (kunjal- vomiting), (ii) vastra dhauti- cleansing with the use of a strip of cloth, (iii) shankhaprakshalana- drinking warm and saline water then allow the drunk water to pass through the alimentary canal.

In Vaman Dhauti or kunjal, we drink 3 to 4 glasses of warm saline water and push the index, middle finger back into oral cavity in an effort to vomit it out.

Kunjal or Vaman Dhauti is very useful practice for eliminating acidity. Many people get different diseases because of hyperacidity, and vaman dhauti or kunjal kriya is a kind of therapy for hyperacidity.

If somebody has the disorder of belching in which stomach acids move up, vaman dhauti is very beneficial.

But kunjal is not recommended practice in the case of hypoacidity.

If somebody has the problem of indigestion, the cause of this is hypoacidity. Due to lack of acidity, it is difficult for our digestive system to digest that food which results as indigestion. In this situation, vyaghra kriya is recommended. This kriya removes the undigested food particles from the digestive tract.

In this vygra kriya, we also vomit but not in the empty stomach rather than 3 to 4 hours later after having the meal.

For constipation problem, shankhprachalana(a form of dhauti) is recommended. In shankhprachalana, we drink around 14 to 20 glasses of warm and saline water and pass it through the other end to clean the whole alimentary canal.

Technique of shankprachalana:

1.    Drink 4 glasses of warm and saline water
2.    Then do the Tadasana , triyak tadasana , kati chakrsasana, triyak bhujangasana , udrakarsana
3.    Then go to the toilet and clear the bowls
4.    Again drink 4 glasses of warm and saline water then follow the same process discussed in steps 2, 3 until transparent water comes out from the anus point.

Shankhprachalana can be practiced twice in the month of March and September, because in these months, the climate is favorable in india for this kriya.

There is hard mucus in intestines and food sticks to that mucus. Then mucus decomposes so it should be eliminated. If decomposed mucus is present in the intestines, intestinal peristalsis becomes slow down. The temperature in large and small intestines also decreases. Due to this body starts absorbing toxins which can be the cause behind many diseases.
