Benefits of Jala Neti?

Neti as a Hatha Yoga Therapy

Our body works like a production house. Production house produces different kinds of daily needing products but in turn, it also produces wastes. In the same manner, everybody’s body also produces wastes. These are 3 kinds –gas, mucus, acidity. We should clean our internal body on regular basis.  Then we can live a healthy life.

We have 6 hatha yoga practices know as shat karmas(cleansing techniques).By practicing these, we can clean the internal body.

Neti

One of the shat karmas is neti.

Technique: We pour warm and saline water into one nostril and it comes out from the other nostril. If there are nasal blockages, we can do another form of neti i.e. sutra neti.

It is recommended to practice neti before practicing pranayama.

At the time of breathing, when air passes through the nostrils, our brain receives information about the ion contents in the air. There are 2 types of ions positive and negative which are separated at the septum of the nose. So nostrils should be cleaned for separation of ions in the air.

Negative ions are beneficial because they clear the allergens such as pollen, mold spores, bacteria, and viruses. They also filter the dust, pet dander, and cigarette smoke.  Negative ions perform this function by attaching themselves to positively charged particles in large numbers and negatively charging those particles. As a result, these viruses, bacteria and pollen spores become too heavy to remain airborne and are thus prevented from entering your breathing passage where they can make you fall sick. In other words, negative ions form a protective circle around you.

When there are blockages in the nostrils, people breathe through the mouth unconsciously at day and night. The reason is that mucus membrane gets inflamed at the nasal opening. So if somebody sprays in the room and you smell that then there are allergic reactions like sneezing, cold because of inflammation in the mucus membrane.

So, it is a compulsion for those people to breathe through the mouth. And oxygen enters directly into the lungs. The mouth cannot separate the ions into gaseous matter. So there is a great stress on the coronary system and also the brain created by lungs. This, in turn, becomes a great strain on the sensory channels and the motor cortex, and results in hysteria and both types of epilepsy.

We can treat these disorders, first, don’t breath through the mouth.

Somebody does mouth breathing if mucus membrane gets inflamed.

So jala neti and sutra neti are very much beneficial for this condition. In sutra , there is some kind of friction created at the septum where monitoring is done and ions are separated there.

Neti is also beneficial for migraine, sinusitis, and many other complaints related to the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
