Theory of concentration | 200 Hrs Yoga TTC in Rishikesh

What is Concentration?

The word concentration is known as a word "Dharana" in sanskrit. What is Dharana(concentration)? Dharana is a sixth very important limbs of Asthanga Yoga. In Asthanga Yoga we study about eight limbs of yoga, these eight limbs of yoga helps us to understand real meaning of yoga.

Eight limbs of Asthanga yoga are as follows:

1- Yama
2- Niyama
3- Asana
4- Pranayama
5- Pratyahara
6- Dharana
7- Dhyana
8- Samadhi

Dharana comes after pratyahara (withdrawal  of senses) and it comes before Dhyana (meditation) so without practice of Dharana one can not experience a meditation in a higher level.

In the ancient texts of yoga,Dharana (concentration) is defined as:
                   Desabandhaschittasya dharana
Desa= place, bandha= binding; chittasya= of the mind; dharana= concentration.
so that, concentration (dharana) is binding the mind to one place.
we also can describe concentration as it is  fixing the mind on an external object or an internal point.

Place here means a mental or physical spot. I define concentration as: detaching the mind from worldly objects and attaching it to the specific object of concentration like any of the chakras (energy centers) in our body, symbol of om, images of any gods and goddesses... Physically on mountains, rivers, birds etc. This is concentration. Right conduct, posture, Pranayama and abstraction from sensual objects will help a long way in achieving rapid success in concentration. Concentration is the sixth step in the yogic ladder.
We have to make sure that we are regular in our practices of other steps of yogic ladder before start the practice of concentration. There can be no concentration without something upon which the mind may rest. A definite purpose, interest, attention will bring success in concentration. If our mind is restless we can not make any progress in concentration and meditation.

One should have patience, strict will and untiring persistence and one must be very regular in the practice. Otherwise laziness and adverse forces will take you away from the aim of your practice. A well trained mind can be fixed at will upon any object either inside or outside to the exclusion of all other thoughts.

Everybody have some ability to concentrate on some levels. But for the spiritual progress and growth concentration should be developed in a very high level. A person who has a ability of good concentration can do a work in a shorter time as compare with a normal person. One thing you have to aware in concentration is that there should not be any kind of strain on the brain. You should not fight or struggle with the mind. Let the thought comes and goes, let the mind be free and be a good observer.  You must find your stability and comfort in the concentration. Make your mind quiet and still and body is still and stable.

Where to Concentrate?

Concentrate gently either on the lots of the heart(Anahata Chakra) or on the space between the two eyebrows (Trikuti, Ajna Chakra),  Crown of the head(Sahasrara Chakra), or on the tip of the nose(Nasikagra Drishti), or on the entrance of the nostrils. Then close your eyes and relax your mind.

Yogis  should know that the seat of the mind is Ajna Chakra so that the mind can be controlled more easily if you concentrate on the Ajna Chakra. Yogis should concentrate on Ajna Chakra. Now, before you start the practice of concentration you should select a center for concentration and stick to it. If you concentrate on the heart stick to it. Never change it. When there is deep concentration you will experience great joy and spiritual intoxication(madness). You will forget the body and the surroundings. All the prana (life Energy) will be taken up to your head and you will experience a concentration in a greater deal. Simply follow these steps and make your life joyful and harmonious in order to achieve a goal of life in yogic practices which is called “Samadhi” “the supreme consciousness”.
