Mooladhara and our personality

The term chakra means all the different components of the person that are associated with a particular chakra. When we are thinking about the chakras, we should consider each one as an actual chakra system and realize that all the different components of each system act together. The system consists of the related parts of the body, the energy system, the lower mental and emotional components, the higher mental and feeling components and the highest realization of those aspects of the individual.

So a chakra system involves all these components.

The following is a list of some the relevant qualities of the mooladhara chakra.

Mooladhara

Basic qualities: Security of the individual and material possessions. Some say that as well as self-preservation, this chakra is concerned also with the preservation of the species, so it involves the reproductive role of sexuality.

Physical: The legs, feet and lower bowel. The nerve plexus is the coccygeal plexus and the endocrines are the adrenal glands and the gonads.

Vitality: Mooladhara is the seat of kundalini shakti, an energy force which can rise up sushumna nadi and awaken all the potentials of the chakras.

I-ness: the of identity at this chakra depends on the level of one's evolvement of these qualites. In mooladhara it can vary anywhere from the lowest level of terrified obsession with survival in tamas, through strong ego in rajas , to oneness with the highest consciousness in sattwa.

Perception: At this chakra one sees the world in terms of safety , physical survival and material security. One is also concerned with security of one's position in 'the bosom' of society.

Memory: Activate mooladhara chakra and up come memoris of past experiences of security or insecurity, material gains or lossess etc.

Instinctual mind: Thoughts are concerned with immediate security and getting and conserving possessions.

Intellectual mind: Plans for ensuring one's future security. This may invlove bodily or family safety but is frequently about material security such as position in society , money , property  and other possessions.

Higer mind: Planning to ensure one's ability to contribute to the benefit of all.

Emotions and feelings: Depending on one's level will vary through fear , insecurity , greed , acquisition , security, generosity , unity etc.

Actions: Will usually be related to the thinking and emotional levels.

Personality aspects of the chakras

Our perception, thinking, emotions and behavior are all unique to each one of us. They help determine how we interact with the world in one way or another. Our memories are important factors here in governing what we will do in each of these aspects of our experience.

We have another important dimension of characteristics which are related to the different aspects of our personalities. They determine:

What aspects of our sensations and perceptions will be most meaningful for us?
What our most significant memories are
What especially drives our thinking patterns?
What our favorite emotions are.
What our most likely behavior patterns are.

These characteristics are connected to a system of centers in the individual called chakras.

What are chakras?
Chakra means ‘wheel’ in Sanskrit. Yogis have defined chakras as energy whirlpool.Energies flow through energy channels called Nadis. Where nadis intersect are known as chakra locations.Chakras act as a switch for the different aspects of our personality. We have thousands of chakras, but seven chakras are important. Chakras are situated along the vertebral column. These are as follows:

Mooladhara chakra: It is situated 1 inch deep in the perineum

Swadhistana chakra: It is located at the sacrum.

Manipura chakra: It is located immediately posterior to naval center at the spine.

Anahata chakra: It is situated in the spine behind the heart.

Vishuddhi Chakra: It is located behind the throat.

Ajna Chakra: It is located deep in the brain behind the eyebrows.

Sahasrara: It is located at the top of the head.

The chakras represent different aspects of the personality, the psychic qualities and also the physical and vital aspects.

Personality aspects of the chakras
Mooladhara Chakra deals with one’s personal security, with getting and keeping money and material possessions and some say with the aspect of sexuality or reproducing progeny.

Swadhisthana Chakra deals with joy, enjoyment of sexuality and seeking pleasure.

Manipura Chakra copes with personal power, actions for completing the tasks and self-esteem.

Anahata Chakra also known as heart chakra is responsible for love, compassion, emotions and other feelings.

Vishuddhi Chakra is responsible for communication and interpersonal relationships.

Ajna Chakra copes with intellect, intuitive knowledge, and  wisdom.

Sahasrara is the center of enlightenment.

Yoga for spine curvature disorders

Lordosis

What is lordosis?

We have natural spine curves , upper back, and lower back. These spine's S shape curvers are called the lordotic (neck and lower back) and kyphotic (upper back).
These curves are helpful to :
  • absorb shock
  • support the weight of the head
  • stabilize and maintain its structure
  • move and bend flexibly
If curve arches too far inward, it’s called lordosis, or swayback. It can affect your lower back and neck. Lordosis give immense pressure on the spine which results in pain and discomfort in spine. It can affect our ability to move in some cases also.

We can improve our condition with daily yoga program.

Types of lordosis?

Lower back lorsosis

The common type of lordosis is in the lower back or lumbar spine.By lying down on the floor , we can check for this condition.

Someone with lordosis will have extra space between their back and the surface. If anybody have an abnormal curve, It will look like C-arch when they stand. And from the side view, their abdomen and buttocks will stick out.

Cervical lordosis

In a healthy spine,  neck should look like a very wide C and the curve points towards the back of  neck. Cervical lordosis is when spine in the neck region doesn’t curve as it normally should.
This can mean:
  • There’s too much of a curve.
  • The curve is running in the wrong direction, also called reverse cervical lordosis.
  • The curve has moved to the right.
  • The curve has moved to the left.
 Causes
  • Spondylolisthesis: Spondylolisthesis is a spinal condition in which one of the lower vertebras slips forward onto the bone below. It's usually treated with therapy or surgery.
  • Achondroplasia: Achondroplasia is one of the most common types of dwarfism.
  • Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis is a bone disease that causes a loss of bone density, which increases risk of fractures.
  • Certain muscles around the hip and lower back become tight-erector spinae and the hip flexors(iliopsoas muscle) ,Others such as the abdominals and the hip extensors(hamstrings and gluteus maximus) become weaker.
Asana for lordosis: The forwardbending asana and those asana which lengthen the spine will be beneficial. For example:
Paschimottan asana ,  Cat pose , child pose , reversed corpse pose etc.
Kyphosis
Kyphosis is characterized by an abnormally rounded upper back (more than 50 degrees of curvature).

Causes-degenerative arthritis, injuries, muscular conditions and problems such as slipped disks and also bad posture like if somebody works on desktop computer for longer hours which can the change the natural thoracic curve.

Asana for kypohsis- The backward bending asana and those asana which extends the spine will be beneficial.
Adho Mukha Svanasana (The Downward Facing Dog Pose)
Marjaryasana (The Cat Pose)
Salabhasana (The Locust Pose)
Setu Bandasana (The Bridge Pose)
Tadasana (The Mountain Pose)
Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (The Upward Facing Dog Pose)

Scoliosis
A person with scoliosis has a sideways curve to their spine. The curve is often S-shaped or C-shaped.

Functional causes : poor posture or repeated unbalanced activity, such as always carrying books on one side.

The curve can impact on the ribs as it may start to pull the ribcage out of position
Scoliosis affects pelvic and shoulder girdles.
Scoliosis also affects the bone, cartelizes and muscles of the spine.

Muscles of concave side of curve become shortened compared with those convex side.
Asana For scoliosis:
Back bending and forward bending asana lengthens the shortened muscles on the concave side and strengthen the muscles on convex side.

How to awaken Kundalini?

Methods of Awakening Kundalini:

In tantric science, various methods are described to practice for awakening the Kundalini energy. This can be practiced individually or in combination. In some people awakening of Kundalini is  god gifted by birth. By a favorable birth, if your parents were highly evolved, you can have an awakened Kundalini. It is possible to be born with an awakened sushumna, ida or pingla nadi. This means that from the time of birth your higher faculties will be operating either partially or fully. If a child comes with partial awakening, he is called a saint, and if he comes with full illumination, he is known as an incarnation, avatara or son of god.

If someone is born with an awakened Kundalini, his experiences are very much under control. They take place in him right from the beginning in a natural way, so he never feels that something extraordinary is happening to him. A child with an awakened Kundalini has clarity of vision, a high quality of thinking and a sublime philosophy. His attitude to life is somewhat unusual as he has total detachment. To him, his parents were only his means of creation, and therefore he is unable to accept the normal social relationship with them. Although he may live with them, he feels as if he were just a guest. Such a child exhibits’ very mature behavior and does not react emotionally to anything in life. As he grows he becomes aware of his mission and purpose in life.

Mantra:
The second method of awakening Kundalini is through regular practice of mantra. This is a very powerful, smooth and risk- free method, but of course it is a sadhana which requires time and a lot of patience. First you need to obtain a suitable mantra from a guru who knows yoga and tantra, and who can guide you through your sadhana. When you practice the mantra incessantly, it develops in you the vision of higher force and enables you to live amidst the sensualities of life with indifference to them.

It is said that the mantra must be chanted loudly, softly, on the mental plane and on the psychic plane. By practicing it at these four levels,Kundalini awakens methodically and systematically. You can also use the mantra by repeating it mentally in coordination with the breath, or you can sing it aloud in the form of kirtan. This creates a great potential in mooladhara and awakening takes place.
Closely related to mantra yoga is awakening through sound or music is nada yoga. Here when we say sounds; it  means the beeja mantras and the music consists of particular melodies corresponding to particular chakras. This is a most tender and absorbing way of awakening.

Tapasya:
The third method of awakening Kundalini is tapasya, which means the performance of austerities. Tapasya is a means of purification, a burning or setting on fire so that a process of elimination is created, not in not in the physical body, but in the mental and emotional bodies. Through this process the mind, the emotions and the whole personality are cleansed of all dirt, complexes and the patterns of behavior that cause pain and suffering. Tapasya is an act of purification. It should not be misunderstood to involve standing naked in cold water or snow, or observing foolish and meaningless austerities.

Tapasya is a psychological or psycho- emotional process through which the aspirant tries to set in motion a process of metabolism that will eradicate the habits that create weakness and obstruct the awakening of will power.”I must do this but I can’t” why does this difference between resolution and implementation arise in the mind of aspirant? Why is it so great? It is due to deficiency of will, and that weakness, that distance a barrier between resolution and execution can be removed through regular and repeated practice of tapasya. Then the willpower makes a decision once and the matter is finished. This strength of will is the fruit of tapasya.

Note: The psychology of tapasya plays a very important part in the awakening of man’s latent power ‘Kundalini’. The psychology of austerity is very sound and certainly not abnormal. When the senses are satisfied by the objective pleasures, by the comforts and luxuries, the brain and nervous system become weak and the consciousness and energy undergo a process of regression. It is in this situation that the method of austerity is one of the most powerful and sometimes explosive method of awakening.

Practice of Raja Yoga:
Practice of raja yoga is one of the method of inducing awakening Kundalini and the development of an equipoise mind. This is the total merging of individual consciousness with superconsciousness. It occurs by a sequential process of concentration, meditation and communion; experience of union with the absolute or supreme. The raja yoga method is very difficult for the majority of people as it requires time, patience, discipline and solidity. Concentration of mind is one of the most difficult things for people of today to achieve. It is not possible to achieve before the mind has been stabilized, the karmas deactivated and the emotions purified through the practices of karma yoga and bhakti yoga. It is the nature of the mind to remain active all the time, and this constitutes a very real danger for people of our time, because when we try to concentrate the mind we create a split. Therefore the majority of us should only practice concentration up to a certain point.
Awakening Kundalini through raja yoga, changes take place in the practioners. One will be able to transcend hunger and all addictions or habits. There no remains a sensuality of life any more also hunger and the sexual urge diminishes and detachment develops naturally. Raja yoga brings about a slow transformation of consciousness.

Practice of Pranayama:
Practice of Pranayama is another method of Kundalini awakening. When a sufficiently prepared aspirant practices intense Pranayama in a calm, cool and quiet environment and a sattvic diet, the awakening of Kundalini takes place like an explosion and it ascends to sahasrara chakra immediately. One must know that Pranayama is not just a breathing exercise or  a means to increase prana in human body, it is a powerful method of creating yogic fire to heat the Kundalini and awaken it. However , if it is not practiced without sufficient preparation, this will not occur because the generated heat will not be directed to the proper centers. Therefore Jalandhara, uddiyana and moola bandhas are practiced to lock the prana in and force it up to the frontal brain.
Direct method and the indirect method are two important ways of awakening Kundalini. Pranayama is the direct method.

Kriya Yoga:

Kriya yoga is the most simple and very practical way of Kundalini awakening for the modern day yoga practioners as it does not require resistance with the mind. Sattwic people are able to awaken Kundalini through raja yoga, but those who have a rajasic mind will not succeed in this way. It will give them more tensions, guilt and complexes  so that for such type of people kriya yoga is the best and the most effective method of Kundalini awakening.
