An understanding of yoga psychology

Around 2,500 years back, great Maharshi Patanjali wrote the foundation of yoga i.e. Yoga Sutra. It is also called Yog Darshan. In this yoga sutra, Patanjali has given instruction for ordinary people so they can evolve their self.He has presented the sutras in a sequential and simpler way that one can evolve to one’s maximum potential. Until now, many commentaries have been written on Yoga Sutras which are helpful to understand this great Yoga text.

The second sutra in Yoga sutra is

Yogaschitta vritti nirodhah

It means “to block the patterns or modification of consciousness is called Yoga”.
Here Chitta means individual consciousness which includes the waking state consciousness, memories or impressions on the subconscious mind and dormant state i.e unconsciousness.
Nirodhah means, we should block those patterns which disturb us not the complete awareness or consciousness.

Vritti means circular patterns of thoughts i.e emotions.

So we attain this high-level peace of mind by yoga practice. If we root out suppressed thoughts which disturb us, we will experience peace and happiness.

It is little difficult to attain that high level of peace of mind(self-realization)by ordinary people. But definitely, by practicing meditation, it helps us to remove disturbing cause i.e. pain and worries and thoughts and emotions about future.

Now it is clear that we should block the pattern of mind i.e vrittis(circular patterns) and these are as follows:

Pramana viparyaya vikalpa nidara smritayuh

It means right knowledge, wrong knowledge, fancy; sleep and memory are fivefold modifications of the mind.

If we compare this sutra to modern psychology, Patanjali was saying the same thing in a different manner.

We have the right knowledge about few things that this is true or not.So this right knowledge can be the cause of worries. Because we overvalue these positively or negatively. So how much we think negatively, it affects us more. By yoga, we acknowledge to the realities and can cope with these what they really are.

Sometimes a wrong perception creation that means we have a wrong knowledge about a thing. And in the present time, many people have the wrong perception about their self. And this is the major cause of depression. Many people compare their self to others and find that they are inferior to others whether it smartness, intelligence etc. Everybody has weaknesses and strengths but we only focus on our weakness when this kind of weakness thought becomes strong, we become depressed. Yoga plays a very crucial role which helps to avoid this kind of thoughts so that we can concentrate on our strengths.

There are many situations in which we create our own story about something which really doesn’t exist like worries about future and guilt about past actions etc. We waste our time on fantasizing of future events.

Sleep also disturbs us. People scarred when they see nightmares. And there are repeated dreams which are scary. The experienced yogis have the ability to remain awake in deep sleep as well.
The unconscious mind is a potent source of disturbance –mental, emotional, physical etc. This emotional memory disturbs us which are suppressed deep in our mind. We can deal with it by meditation through which these memories comes into our conscious plane.

Sage Patanjali has presented a concept to get rid of these worries and pain i.e. eight limbs of
Patanjali. So we can attain a peace of mind to some extent. These eight limbs are:

1.    Yamas(self-restraints)
2.    Niyams(personal codes of conduct)
3.    Asanas(postures)
4.    Pranayamas(breathing exercise)
5.    Pratyahara( Mental withdrawal from outside world)
6.    Dharana(Concentration)
7.    Dhyana(Meditation)
8.    Samadhi(Transcendental Consciousness)

An understanding of Yoga

Please Read the complete article below and share and like it.
A definition given by Swami Niranjan “ Yoga is an ancient system of philosophy, lifestyle and techniques that evolve the whole person, the physical, the vitality, the mind and emotions, wisdom, ethics and a higher quality of relationships and the realization of the spiritual reality of each of us.”

Yoga is the process of personal inquiry and experience. It is started in the ancient time when man started a journey of self-discovery. We can improve our self-understanding only when we know how our body works. For self-awareness, we should have knowledge of how our mind works.Self realization is an experience of spirit within us.

Self-realization is the long process and we have to follow the spiritual path for many years. So ancient yogis developed asana, shatkarmas, and pranayamas. Also, our mind should have a clear thinking, so they developed meditation techniques.

The word yoga originated from the Sanskrit word “Yuj” which means ‘yoke’ i.e. unity, harmony, and union. So yoga means self-knowledge, understanding, awareness, and union of individual consciousness to universal consciousness.

The evidence of yoga we get dates back 4000 years to the early Vedas. But, it is believed that yoga was developed before any written forms. And at that time a guru used to tell this knowledge to his disciple by mouth word.

Yoga philosophy tries to answer the basic questions like who are we? What is our purpose to be here in this universe? Does health, suffering, illness, accidents have any role in our life or are this only coincidence?

Yoga has a philosophical background but nobody orders us to believe in it that is why it is not treated as a religion. Yoga has different branches or path like karma yoga, bhakti yoga, gyana yoga, ashtanga yoga. We practice different techniques and follow any path because it is for our personal growth.
Yoga is a lifestyle which deals with our health and wellbeing. It tells in which environment we should live, how we should interact with the people. It also suggests about our behavior. It explains individual consciousness and universal consciousness.

By the practice of yoga, we can evolve our self. It leads us to self-realization and this can be achieved in this life as well. Evolvement means transcendence in our present level of awareness. According to yoga, we have five sheaths(koshas) i.e annamaya kosha(physical body), pranamaya kosha(energy body), manomaya kosha(mental body), vijanmaya kosha(wisdom body), anandmaya kosha(bliss body). So the purpose of our is to transcend from annamaya kosha and reach the anandmaya kosha to experience self-realization.

 Definition of chakra:

The word Chakra literally means ‘wheel’ or ‘circle’. Chakras are known as wheel of life. Each chakra is a switch which turns on or opens up specific areas of the brain. In most people these psychic centres lie dormant and inactive. Concentration on the chakras while performing yogic practices stimulates the flow of energy through the chakras and helps to activate them.

Chakras help to awaken the dormant areas in the brain and their corresponding faculties in the psychic and mental bodies, which allow one to experience higher level of consciousness which normally is inaccessible. There are seven major chakras  and they are located along the pathway of sushumna nadi which flows through the centre of the spinal cord. Sushumna nadi starts at the perineum and ends at the top of the head. These seven chakras are connected to nadis (psychic channels) which are the subtle form of nerves. The chakras are shoen symbolically as lotus flowers,  each having a particular number of petals and its characteristic color.  Each chakra has its own bij (seed) mantra.

Description of the seven chakras

Mooladhara chakra:
Mooladhara chakra is the first energy center in human body. It is a lowest chakra situated at the perineum in the male body and at the cervix in the female body. The word mool means ‘root’ and adhara means ‘place.’ So that Mooladhara chakra is also called root chakra. Therefore, it is known as the root centre. The symbol of root chakra is deep red color lotus with four petals. There is a yellow square yantra called oiprithvi tattwa (earth element) and the beeja mantra for mooladhara chakra is “LAM”. In the center of the square is a red triangle, which is the symbol of shakti or creative energy with its apex pointing downward. Mooladhara is the seat or dwelling place of primal energy, is called Kundalini shakti.

It is also believed that the aim of yoga is to awaken the dormant kundalini  through self-purification and concentration  of mind and to lead it up through the chakras to top where sahasrara chakra is located on the crown of head. Where, as pure energy or shakti it unites
With pure consciousness, Shiva.

Vata(wind),Pitta(bile),Kapha(mucus) and their effect in the body

Ayur means 'life' and Veda means 'knowledge', so Ayurveda is a science of life. It is a kind of science that which preserve health. After understanding Ayurveda, we become aware of destroyers of health. Ayurveda helps in removal of diseases. So our lifespan increases.

Humans are made of five elements known as earth, water, fire, air, and ether. According to Ayurveda water, fire and air are very important. Another thing is that like increases like.  We get burn in part of our body and enter in sun light so it will not be good because this will increase the temperature of burnt part so we should put ice on burnt area.

Ayurveda believes that we can remodel our perception about life.We know that humans are made of five elements but the ratios of these elements are different in everybody. So we should have knowledge about this. But to diagnose the ratios of these elements, it takes time.We should to some training for that. And after the experience, we would be able to divide the human body into vata, pitta, and Kapha. The vata contains a lot of air and space. The pitta contains more fire and water and the Kapha has more earth and water.

As we know, Air is light and it can move easily and is normally cool. So the people who have dry skin, nails, and hair and remain cool most of the time, they are Vata people. Vata people have good quantity of air and space, so sometimes they become spaced-out. Vata people have the ability to think quickly. They are creative naturally. But Vata is in disharmony, they experience anxiety, fear, stress. Because of lacking or earth element, vata people are not grounded.

Kapha people have power and endurance. They are loyal and keep patience in many situations. Because of water element, they don’t like cold. If their composition gets unbalanced, they experience some problems like laziness and obesity.

People who are aggressive and have pale yellow skin, blue eyes are Pitta people. They have a lot of heat. If their Pitta is unbalanced, they will be obsessive. They have good muscles. They are comfortable in movement but in comparison to vata, they are less movable. The concentration of these people is very good. Because of hot heat element, they have good digestion.

The meaning of dosha is a waste in Sanskrit language. In the process of digestion, body absorbs nutrients and produces waste. When there is a lot of wind production, these are Vata people.Vata people have dry skin and they show anxiety quickly. A pitta person has heat.If heat is unbalanced, these people face digestive system disorders because of excess heat and bile production. With the imbalance of Kapha, there would be build up of mucus so this is the problem of Kapha people.

If we want to treat a diseased person, so, first of all, we should recognize the person’s personality i.e. which element or dosha is dominant to diseased person.

So after recognizing, we can give treatment by using Ayurveda and Yoga. For example, if somebody’s Vata is dominant so that person should not come into contact with dry air for longer duration because like increases like. If somebody’s Kapha is dominant, that person should not stay in the cold air for the longer duration. And If somebody’s pitta is dominant, that person should not come into the contact of the sun for the longer duration.

The other thing which is important for treatment that we should increase the digestion efficiency. Here digestion is not limited to food. We take food, water, air, thoughts, emotions etc. We can have constipation problem of food, thoughts, and emotions. Here constipation means something has been stuck whether it is the digestive tract or in our mind. Sometimes, we have thoughts of inferior about our self and others. So we should digest and eliminate these.

If we don’t digest these, we would not able to absorb these and these appear as disease, anxiety, fear, hatred or sadness.

We can digest and eliminate food, thoughts , emotions by Agni(fire). Agni is the flame of consciousness, a flame which ignites itself and which does not need any outer cause. So we can increase this Agni by yoga practice.

By the practice of kunjal, we can balance mucus. We can balance bile by shankprachalana by pranayama, we can balance the wind. We can digest the thoughts and emotions by meditation and yoga nidra.

How to balance Piita(bile) by Yogic practices?

Since the ancient times, yoga and Ayurveda are said to be sisters. Both of these were written in Sanskrit in the ancient times. When there is a union of individual consciousness to super consciousness, we call it yoga and Ayurveda are knowledge of life.

Ayurveda has mentioned three necessary roots for the living. These are Vata(wind), Pitta(bile) and Kapha(mucus). In the absence of these three doshas, the body will not survive. Vata is responsible for the movement of the organism. Pitta is responsible for metabolism and the processes of transformation, and Kapha is responsible for form and structure.

If these doshas are not in harmony, diseases may occur. So it is needed that these doshas should be in a balanced state for the functioning of good health. Pitta dosha is a waste product of the blood. Pitta is hot, liquid, sour and pungent as mentioned in  Charaka Samhita, one of the ancient Ayurvedic text. It is present in the stomach , small intestine(duodenum), liver. It is also present in eyes, skin, brain etc.

According to Charaka Samhita, if Pitta is not in harmony, we have some symptoms. We experience heat, moisture, sloughing, itching, redness etc..

If Pitta is balanced, one’s show intellectuality and good thinking at the mental level. One shows his emotions in the form of courage, joy, and passion at the emotional level. But when it not in its balanced state, one shows anger, aggression, impatience.

We can bring pitta into the balanced state by yogic practices. Pitta is hot so we should practice that practices have opposite effect on the body.So sheetali and sheetkari pranayamas can be used to balance pitta. In sheetali and sheetkari, the inhaled air is cool, this air cools the blood. So these pranayamas decrease the body temperature.

We can balance Pitta by asana practice. Pitta is responsible for digestion, absorption, and assimilation. If we practice that asana which affects our digestive system organs like stomach, large intestine, small intestine,  so these would be helpful to balance pitta.ing of the liver, stomach, and duodenum.

We can practice Surya Namaskar, paschimottanasana ,Naukasana, tadasana, tiryaka tadasana,Pada hastasana, Bhujangasana, tiryaka Bhujangasana, shalabhasana, sarpasana , Pada  trikonasana, meru wakrasana, bhunamanasana and ardha matsyendrasana to balance pitta.

These asanas properly massage the abdominal organs and improve their functioning.

Another thing that we can do is with our mental attitude. When our Pitta is imbalanced, we show impatience, aggressiveness, anger. But when Pitta is in a balanced state, our mind is very relaxed and we show positivity. So in a vice versa manner, if we do some kind of spiritual sadhana, it will calm our mind down, so it will be helpful to balance pitta.

We can also practice shatkarmas to balance pitta like laghoo shankprachalana and purna shankhaprachalana.

We are a yoga teacher training school in Rishikesh India. We at Rishikesh Yog Van conducts 200 hrs Yoga TTC in Rishikesh , one week yoga course in Rishikesh India and asana course in Rishikesh. We teach these yogic practices like shatkarma and pranayama in our 200 hours yoga ttc.

So Join us to explore a real practice of yoga sadhana and learn how to apply in your daily life, Let this energy flow within you inside you and let the true harmony rule.
