Yoga and Psychology

Perception
Everybody perceives the world in a different manner. It is not possible for us to be aware of the objects of our surroundings. So perception chooses those objects and events that have to mean for us as an individual.

Some of the inputs of sensation and perception from them have to mean for everybody. So we get attention easily. For example, somebody whom we like is coming to us or a lion is about to attack on us.

Some perceptions are colored by our feeling of the present moment. For example, if we like somebody, that person looks smart but if we are in anger same person doesn’t look smart.
Due to differences between our perceptions, everybody experiences a different world and so our responses are different.

As we advance in yoga, we clear out our old memories, attitudes, suppositions, preconceptions, blockages etc and start to see the world and other people without projecting onto them the old stuff that is really inside our own head. When our perceptions change which affects our thoughts, emotions, and behavior also.As a result, we show a positive attitude for the society. This is kind of evolution we get by yoga.

Memory
There are three types of memory: sensory memory, short term memory, and long term memory.

Long term memory
Our past experiences, memories of facts and different skills come under long term memory.
Some people’s memories are full of emotional experiences; other people have fairly emotionally neutral memories. Some people have memories of joy and happiness, other have memories of fear and worry. Everybody experiences different regarding power, self-esteem, love, and relationships.
For few, these experiences can be better and for few, these can be worse. And these experiences affect us when we deal with different situations.

Some memories contain the deep instinctual drives and the desires that stem from them, as well as the strong experiences of fear, hurt etc, which is unacceptable for us to realize. They are so emotionally painful that at some level of our consciousness we don’t want to know about them at all, so they have been covered over by repression and other defensive mental mechanisms. These especially are the ones that cause us grief, anger, shame, guilt and affect our lives in so many ways.
Yoga helps us to bring these memories into our conscious surface and then we can neutralize them.

Thoughts
Everybody thinks differently in many situations. In a single situation, one can think something while another can think different totally. For example, if we see a snake coming to us, we will run away from that place while in the same situation a snake handler will not run away. That means the situation is same but the thoughts about snake are different. So our thinking pattern directs our behavior.

The mind processes the input and tries to give it relevance, with the object of making a decision. The process goes through a number of stages, but they can happen so quickly that we don’t even notice. The first mind identifies the object, then decides it is relevant or not, after that compares this with old memories, then assesses it after that judge it and finally mind take a decision.

So yoga develops our ability to watch our thoughts, we can often see these different stages of decision making going on our own mind. We can then recognize old habits of mind based on these six steps, and decide what to do about them.
