What are gunas?

In the widest sense gunas are the qualities of all creative nature described by Sri Krishna in the Bhagwad Gita as sattwa, rajas, tamas. Here sattwa means purity, rajas means passion, and tamas means inertia.

Sattwa, Rajas, and Tamas are inborn qualities and bind fast in the body and these are not destructible.

Sattwa is luminous and healthy. It is bound by attachment to happiness and by attachment to knowledge.

Rajas are nature’s passion. It binds by attachment to action.

Tamas is born of ignorance and binds by indolence and sleep.

Sattwa, Rajas, and Tamas apply to all aspects of nature but In Srimad Bagwad Gita, It is applied to human. So it is clear that it describes the evolution of thinking and behavior of humans. Sattwa, Rajas and Tamas qualities remain present in the body all the time but of these only one quality is dominant.

When sattwa is in the dominant state, we are attracted to purity, happiness, and knowledge. When Rajas is dominant, we are passionate to fulfill our desires. And tamas pushes us towards laziness and sleep.

The Sattwa influenced person see “nothing is going to be destroyed in anybody”. His awareness become like that he feels no separation among him and others. Sattwa person shows nonattachment to worldly things and whatever they do is without expectations of fruit. They don’t have the ego and remain stable in any situation.

The Rajas influenced person thinks all are different so they have desires of access in worldly things. They are passionate to achieve the high reputation in the society.

The Tamas influenced people are fanatical. They stick to their ideas and views. They don't have common sense. They take decisions without consideration and sometimes they don’t think about consequences.

So these qualities influence us time to time. Sometimes Sttawa is dominant, sometimes Rajas and sometimes Tamas. And our behavior, emotions, thoughts changes according to these qualities. We are the mixture of these qualities.

So from yogis point of view Sattwa is a preferable quality which is most evolved level and closest to the highest levels of our being. It is productive of our greatest progress and happiness.

So gunas color everything they influence with qualities. And these are:

Sattwa
Purity
Balance, light, clear  perception, simplicity
Seeking and getting knowledge
Emotions are positive

Rajas
Passion
Personal ambition, ego, effort
Activities that fulfill the desires and ambitions

Tamas
Inertia
Stability, lethargy, laziness
Fatigue, dullness, apathy, feeling stuck
Negative emotions
Illogical thinking
Actions defensive and can be harmful to others.
