Swar Yoga and Brain Hemispheres

Since the ancient times, yogis knew that when right nostril is dominant, it is Pingala. And this time we are extroverted, more active and warmer, which are sun qualities. As against this, when left nostril is dominant, it is ida and this time, we are introverted, cooler which are moon qualities. When both nostrils flow equally, it is susumana and it is a balancing state.

The Brain Hemispheres

The human has two hemispheres, left and right. And 97% of people have their left hemisphere is dominant. The left hemisphere is involved in language and the right hemisphere handles spatial orientation and recognition of faces and objects.

The left hemisphere is larger. It contains several short fibers and makes several connections so it can handle details well. The right hemispheres have long fibers and it makes fewer connections so it handles perception and concepts well.

The corpus callosum is a large bundle of fibers that links the hemispheres. And this is responsible for information transformation between the hemispheres.

Motor and sensory functions are done by both hemispheres but there are some functions which are done only one hemisphere, not by the other. For example, speech is controlled by the left part of the brain, any damage to that part can make us unable to speak.

Also, both the hemispheres work in combination, like for example, if we are reading a story, the left hemisphere is responsible for reading words and its meaning while the right hemisphere converts the story in visual assumption.

Effects of the individual hemispheres

Perception
The left hemisphere is responsible for speech perception and right hemisphere can recognize the simple names.

Left hemisphere perceives the details of surrounding and right hemisphere takes the whole scene.
Thinking

Left hemisphere is responsible for logical, mathematical and analytical work and right hemisphere for intuitive, face identification.

Emotion
The left side of the brain is activated when we have a positive feeling like happiness, joy. And the right side of the brain is activated when somebody experiences negativity.

So it is clear from the above statements that negative qualities are connected to the right side of the brain. But at the higher level of evolution right side is for music, art, intuition, imagination.

Structure of nostrils

Mucus membrane
Mucus membrane covers the inner wall of the respiratory tract and it is soft, moist skin.It secretes a slippery fluid i.e. mucus which moistens the inhaled air and catches the dust particles, viruses, bacteria.

The tiny hairs present on this mucus membrane and moves the mucus so that we can spit the mucus out or swallow it.
Turbinates

These are 3 projections on the lateral side of each nostril. These are helpful to fill the nostrils space. When there is swelling in the mucus membrane, nostrils are blocked.
Septum

The center of the nose has a vertical wall of tissue. It separates the nostrils from each other.
Relation of breath flow and brain hemispheres

When the breath flow in left nostril is dominant, right hemisphere becomes more active and if the breath flow in right nostril is dominant, left hemisphere becomes more active. So nostril flow provokes within us the type of perception, thinking, emotions and behavior.

Breath flow switches in daily rhythms

There is a term used in yoga i.e. swara which is related to our nostril dilation and constriction. In every 90 minutes, the breath flow switches from one nostril to other. When our right nostril is flowing freely, we should do outgoing and teaching activities. When left nostril is flowing freely, we should do quiet and learning interactions. When both nostrils flow freely, this is the best time for meditation.

Problem with imbalanced breath flow
Breath flow in the nostrils can affect us in the following way

1.    If right nostril is blocked (right hemisphere is dominant), we would be overcautious, pessimistic. We will show fear, anxiety.
2.    If left nostril is blocked (left hemisphere is dominant) , we become under cautious, careless.

There is one more problem. For few people, their one nostril is completely blocked for many hours and then other nostril blocks for many hours. So this longer blockage can disturb their daily life.

Solution:

We should try to balance the breath flow in nostrils.

1.    We can check the breath flow by blocking the nostrils. After recognizing, place a thick object under the armpit of that side where the breath is flowing freely. So after some time, breath flow would be normal in opposite side.
2.    Lie down on that side where the breath is flowing freely. After some time the opposite side nostril will be opened.
3.    For a  period of time breathing through the partially blocked nostril, and after some time, it will open.
