Yoga for stability

Everybody has a different opinion about yoga, few take it as an exercise, few practice asana and say, they are doing yoga.  Many people join 200 hours yoga teacher training courses in Rishikesh India.The purpose of joining a yoga teacher training course is different for everybody.Few join to improve their knowledge, few join for health benefits, few for refreshments, and few for real understanding.




If I share my experience, Yoga is a way of unfolding hidden qualities of the human beings and activating dormant faculties.

If we go for definitions, it means union, i.e. union of individual consciousness to universal consciousness. But practically, it is helpful to harmonizing our life. It helps to maintain the balance of body, brain, balance, mind, spirit. When all of these balance, we show a different personality and we have the different level of awareness level.

Different states of mind

In different moments, we have a different state of consciousness. When we are happy, it is a  state of consciousness, when we are sad; it is another state of consciousness. That means due to any reason if there is the change in our normal behavior of the mind, it can be said to be an altered state. 

When we face different problems, Yoga helps to get rid of these problems by being stable. There are lots of ups and own, we are confronted in the modern time.

Because of these confrontations, our mind fluctuates most of the time. And we are not able to use our maximum capacity. We face difficulty in concentrating which affects our memory to some extent. So it is kind of unbalanced state.  By practicing yoga, we can bring our mind in a stable condition.

 Benefits of asana, pranayama physically and mentally

In the modern time, we are not involved in any kind of workout, we rarely do forward bend, backbend, twisting. So our muscles are contracted and we get pain and aches. And this physical instability disturbs our mind , once our mind disturbs , it affects our body as well.So it is cycle which goes on all the time which results health issues.

If we  practice asana , these asana gives different kind of stretches to our bones. By taking proper diet, our bone density increases .Asana tones the muscles and increases the blood circulation, impurities are removed and nutrients are transported in muscle tissues. So our muscles get strength. These different asana massages our internal organs, particularly digestive system organs , so our digestive system work in harmony. Then it helps other body system indirectly.

Pranyama has also many benefits , these improve digestion , relaxes the mind , increases metabolic rate etc.Pranayamas purifies the energy channels also.If there are energy blockages , we get physical and mental disorders.That means metal and physical instability.

So by practicing yoga , it will stable our physical and energy spheres in turn we would remain stable in every phase of our life.

Science of Kumbhaka(Breadth Retention) | 200 Hrs Yoga TTC in Rishikesh


What happens in Kumbhaka? 



During the breath retention , diffusion of the gases is dependent on the surface area of the lungs,the membrane and pressure of the O2 an Co2.

When O2 and CO2 on the both side of membrane equalized on the lungs, diffusion stops. So after that it is not a good idea to retain the breath. Because we are not going to get any benefit after that.

During the retention period, we are not taking the more oxygen in , but our body has a demand of oxygen all the time. Our brain is very sensitive to the lowered oxygen level. Normally our body and brain don’t use every capillary. But when we apply kumbhaka(breath retention) , the unused capillaries are going to be used because this is a kind of emergency call , i.e. there is  oxygen deficiency in the body as well as in the brain. We know that 25% of the blood is circulated in the brain. Oxygen is also transported with blood. So vasodilation occurs. That means in this breath retention state unused capillaries are opened so that brain can get sufficient oxygen supply.
So with this phenomena , dormant parts of the brain stimulated.


Slow exhalation has a soothing effect
After breath retention when we exhale slowly , it is also beneficial , because if we exhale quickly , our lungs would have same effect like a rubber band. If we don’t care about exhalation after kumbhaka , our lungs will come into its original position violently. But If we exhale slowly, this slow exhalation will help to maintain its elasticity.

Also, with slow exhalation, there is a conscious effort by us, in this way, inhibitory impulses are sent by cerebral cortex to midbrain. Adjacent to midbrain, there is hypothalamus present and hypothalamus is the center of emotions. So this phenomena has soothing effect as well.


Pranayama improves concentration
 
In our daily life , we do breathing involuntarily and unconsciously that means we don’t observe our breath. We are involved in worldly engagements.But when apply a conscious effort while inhalation, retention and expiration, we observe our breath .And we are separated from the world to some extent which improves our concentration and memory.

What is Science of Kapalbhati Pranayama ?


Science of Kapalbhati Pranayama

In the ancient times, Kapalbhati is used to be a cleansing technique but it is treated as pranayama in the present time. Kapalbhati energies the entire brain and helpful in activating the dormant parts of the brain.

During normal inhalation, diaphragm and external intercostals muscles contract actively. In exhalation, internal intercostals muscles relax. In Kapalbhati, this process is reversed. This phenomenon stimulates the dormant parts of the brain because there is reversed nerve impulses to and from the brain.



Technique

Sit in a simple cross leg posture or any other meditative posture like sidhhasana or siddha yoni asana, lotus posture etc.

Place hands on your knees in the chin or gyana mudra.

Inhale deeply and  exhale forcefully 

Practice 30 rapid respirations, but every time emphasis should be on exhalation and inhalation should be passive.  

After the 30 strokes, inhale deeply through the nose and exhale quickly through the mouth,  and retain the breadth externally.

Apply jalandhara bandha , moola bandha and uddiyana bandha simultaneously.

Maintain these for some time according to your capacity then release the bandhas in reverse  
order.

Gradually, we should increase the number of strokes.


Brain get massaged in Kapalbhati
 
When we inhale normally, the brain contracts because the cerebrospinal fluid around the brain compressed. The brain expands slightly when we exhale because cerebrospinal fluid decompressed at that time. 

In kapalbhati, the number of respirations is more. So brain expands and contracts more. That means brain massaged more in a minute. This increases the blood and oxygen supply to the brain. The capillaries are opened up and there is increased blood supply to dormant parts of the brain as well as pineal and pituitary gland which is helpful for proper functioning of these glands.

Thus kapalbhati removes the impurities from the brain because of increased blood supply. Kapalbhati also  removes more CO2 and other waste gases from lungs as well.

There are chances that when a beginner experiences dizziness .The reason behind that more co2 expelled in kapalbhati.Also, more oxygenated blood reaches the brain because of that blood vessels constrict as a result there is a decrease in blood supply and so the deficiency of oxygen in the brain and we experience dizziness.

Why Should we do deep or yogic breathing?




Benefits of deep breathing or yogic breathing




 

Life is connected to our breathing pattern that means if we breathe in a right way, we would be healthier for a long duration of life. But we are not aware of this fact which results in diseases.

The persons who sit for longer hours, breathe around 17 times per minute. On an average, an adult takes 500 ml of air in an inhalation. But a yoga practitioners who do pranayama or deep breathing, inhale around 5 liters of air.

If we compare normal breathing and deep breathing, we inhale the same volume of air.

In deep breathing, we expend the lungs more so lungs surface area increases and the time taken in inhalation also increases.

In normal breathing, the surface area of lungs increases less as compare to deep breathing.Our lungs contain around 71 million alveoli. Alveoli grouped together are in close contact with each other like a bunch of grapes. According to the Scientists, if alveolies are unfolded , the total surface area would be around  100 to 150 square meter.

So when we inhale deeply , the surface area of the lungs increases and if retain the breath, exchange of gases occurs during this retention period. That means oxygen absorption increases.

If we regularly practice deep or yogic breathing on daily basis, we would be used to of deep breathing and we will start unconsciously deep breathing.

Deep Breathing makes our defense system stronger

When we inhale deeply,  our nostrils work like radiators and warms up the inhaled air. During exhalation, air coming from the lungs warms up the nostrils as well.

So quick breathing is not recommended for the longer duration. If we do quick breathing, we are more prone to getting cold and pneumonia. That means our defense system weakens in quick breathing.
