In yoga, a term nadi is used several times whenever somebody discusses about prana or vital force or kundilini yoga.
Naids are energy channels
through which vital energies or pranas circulates all over the body. For clear understanding,
we can compare nadis to blood vessels. In the human body blood circulates all
over body so for this purpose we have blood vessels. Similarly for pranas to
flow or circulate all over the body, we have nadis. But one point is here that
nadis are not physical entities, these are related to subtle body. In spirituality,
nadis have very high respect. According to the yogic text, we have 72000 nadis in
the body. But the three nadis Ida, Pingla and Susumana are important.
In yoga ,there is concept i.e. swar yoga , which
related to breath flow in nostrils. The breath flow in left nostril is related
to ida nadi and breath flow in right nostril is related to pingla nadi. Ida and
pingla flows in spiral shape and meet at the ajna chakra. When both nostrils
flow in harmony, only then susumana is awakened. This is time for kundalini to
go in a straight way along the vertebral column and it reaches at sahasrara
chakra. If there are blockages in the nostrils that means there is obstruction
for ida and pingla. So we can remove the blockages by water cleansing and then
we can practice nadi sodhana pranayama(alternate nostril breathing).
